Why Mexico is a Popular Destination for Americans of All Ages

Mexico has long been a favorite destination for Americans looking for a change of scenery, a lower cost of living, or a warmer climate. But in recent years, the number of Americans moving to Mexico, or attempting to do so, has increased significantly. Here are some of the reasons why Mexico is attracting more Americans of all ages.

Retirement: Mexico is one of the top retirement destinations for Americans, especially those who want to stretch their savings and enjoy a high quality of life. According to the International Migration Outlook 2020, Mexico had about 1.2 million immigrants in 2018, of which 50% were family members of migrants. Many of these family members are likely spouses or children of retirees who have moved to Mexico. Some of the benefits of retiring in Mexico include affordable health care, a favorable exchange rate, a variety of cultural and natural attractions, and a friendly and welcoming culture.

Work: Mexico is also a popular destination for Americans who want to work remotely, start a business, or find a job in a growing economy. According to the International Migration Outlook 2020, Mexico received 15.1% of its immigrants in 2018 as labor migrants, mostly from the United States and Canada. Some of the advantages of working in Mexico include lower taxes, less bureaucracy, more opportunities for entrepreneurship, and access to a large and diverse market. According to the U.S. citizens moving to Mexico in record numbers, govt. data shows, the number of U.S. citizens living in Mexico increased by 12% in 2022, reaching a total of 1.5 million. This is the highest number ever recorded by the Mexican government. Part of the increase is attributed to the rise of digital nomads who can work remotely from anywhere in the world, and who are attracted by Mexico’s lower cost of living, warmer climate, and cultural diversity.

Adventure: Mexico is also a magnet for Americans who want to experience a different culture, learn a new language, or explore new places. According to Mexico Immigration Statistics, Mexico received more than 1.6 million tourists from the United States in 2019, an increase of 9.4% from 2018. Some of the attractions of visiting Mexico include its rich history, its vibrant cuisine, its diverse landscapes, and its friendly people.

Asylum: Mexico is also a destination for Americans who are seeking asylum or protection from violence, persecution, or human rights violations in their home country. According to What’s happening at the U.S.-Mexico border in 7 charts, the U.S. Border Patrol reported more than 1.6 million encounters with migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border in fiscal year 2021, more than quadruple the number of the prior fiscal year and the highest annual total on record. Many of these migrants are fleeing from poverty, crime, corruption, or political instability in their countries of origin, such as Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Haiti, Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua. Some of them are also seeking asylum in Mexico instead of the United States, due to the stricter immigration policies and longer processing times in the latter.

As you can see, Mexico offers many benefits and opportunities for Americans of all ages who want to move there or visit there. Whether you are looking for retirement, work, adventure, or asylum, Mexico has something for everyone.
